These are a pair of experimental felt boots that I made on Monday.
My polystyrene lasts - which are great for low slippers - are simply not high enough for making boots! And I cant find anytaller ones to buy... only one thing for it, I needed to make my own lasts. In the past Ive used tape, old socks & polyfibre stuffing, but the lasts I wanted are too high for that (I did try - I taped up to the height I needed but I couldnt get it back off, ended up cutting it off & chucking away).
The next idea was my husbands. I used a pair of old wellies, which he cut the heel and thick sole off. I trimmed the height, stuffed and duct taped them up and they worked pretty well.
They`re just drying out now.
Yesterday & today Ive been at work, so no felt :(

I'm curious why the duct tape lasts didn't work for you? Mine are as high as my knee! You do have to cut them off to get out but you just tape over that and you should be good to go. I have some tips for this at http://www.deeplyfelt.com/2010/02/let-me-pointer-you-in-right-direction.html I've not tried the boot idea because it seems to me that the finished felt would be too big for me.... how did you avoid that? I'd love to know.

Helen, I think the problem was I got my lovly hubby to tape me up & it was rather tight... I did try taping them up after but, it just wasnt working. I will try again though after reading your tips - thanks for that :)
They would of been to big, I cheated a little bit. After Id cut them off and blanket stitched the cut edge (with silk for decoration) I put them in the washing machine on the shortest wash and it shrunk them down nicely. I had to stretch them over my polystyrene lasts, left them to dry on there for a couple of days and they are great now, really thick & sturdy :)
